Theodore Frank The Finest Dog Around

Chapter I

I was sleeping in a cage with these two mongrel cocka-poos who just wouldn't settle down. All of a sudden this big hand reached in and yanked me out of the cage. I was kind of scared. Normally the big hands meant bad news, you were either gonna get stuck with something or a bath when those hands came around and neither of those options are very pleasant. Fortunately this time things were different. I was carried through these big doors where I met Bubba. He was a big guy with a big smile and bushy eyebrows.

When I was placed in his hands, I climbed right up his arm and started chewing on his ear. Bubba laughed and let me keep exploring his big hairy head. I nibbled on his eyebrows, his hair, I licked his nose and even took a nip at his upper lip.

Bubba asked the guy who yanked me out of the cage a bunch questions. I remember him telling Bubba I was born in Montana, which didn't seem right to me. Bubba kept looking at his watch while he was talking to the guy with the big hands.

I finished exploring Bubba's big head and was just starting to get comfortable in his arms. All of a sudden Bubba put me back in those big hands that yanked me out of the cage earlier and  walked away. I figured I'd never see him again. I was taken back through the doors and shoved back in the cage with the two mongrels. After the traditional K-9 butt sniffs I settled down and tried to go back to sleep.

I was just about asleep when the big hand grabbed me out of the cage again. This time when we went through the big doors I was placed in the arms of this little lady with short white hair and sparkly glasses hanging around her neck. Mama was kind of reluctant to hold me. Then I heard Bubba talking to us, I looked up and he was leading us into this little cubical where we sat down on a bench. After a little nuzzling against her neck and some chewing on her sparkly glasses Mama soon warmed up to me.

She was giving off all sorts of mixed messages. First she was saying how some guy named Dad would have a fit if they brought home another dog and how somebody named Clancy would get upset. Then she was saying how Father wasn't going to be happy about this and Clancy is going to be so jealous. That's when I suspected I was about to be rescued from my miserable situation living in a dark cage with those two mongrels. Then Mama told Bubba I was going to be his Birthday and Christmas present. At that point I was sure I was about to be saved.

The guy with the big hands brought over some papers that were filled out. Then he started leading Bubba and me around the store and handing all sorts of different items to Bubba. Bubba just handed most of those things back to the guy and said no thanks. Then we went of to a counter with a big machine on it where Bubba and the big guy exchanged some more papers. Then as quickly as my hopes of rescue were raised they were sunk. Bubba Handed me back to the guy with the big hands, scratched my head and said "See you later little guy." He turned away and along with Mama walked away.

The guy with the big hands took me back through the big doors, but instead of shoving me back in the cage with the two mongrels, he put me in an empty cage all alone. I was confused and devastated. I tried to settle down and go back to sleep. But all I could think about was how I was about to be saved and suddenly everything fell apart and I ended up alone in this cage.

I don't know how long I was left  alone in that cage but it seemed like a lifetime and in a sense it was. Though I didn't realize it until then, somebody like Mama and Bubba coming to rescue me is what I'd been waiting for my entire life.

I was still feeling sorry for myself when the big hand came and grabbed me out of the cage again. He set me down on a counter put a collar around my neck, picked me up again and carried me through the big doors. As soon as the big doors opened I saw Bubba on the other side with that big stupid smile on his face. He swooped me out of that guys big hands, said goodbye and carried me outside where the light was so bright it hurt my eyes.

When we got outside into the bright light Bubba turned, showed me a sign and read to me; "Cairn Terrier 75% Off". Bubba told me "Don't  you worry little guy nobodies going to treat you like that ever again. There are certainly people who deserve to be knocked down 75%, but doing that to a Cairn is down right abusive."

Bubba carried me to a big car and set me in Mama's lap. Then we drove away and I'm happy to say we've never gone back to that place.
