Book II Theodore Frank The Finest Dog Around
Chapter II We didn't drive very far when the car stopped. Bubba gave me a pat on the head and got out while Mama stayed with me in the car. Bubba wasn't gone very long when the car door opened again and another dog jumped in and scrambled over to greet Mama. She was bigger than me with closely cropped hair around her face and she smelled like you do right after you get a bath. Upon seeing me the dog got even more excited than she was at seeing Mama. Her tail started wagging so hard it felt like the whole car was shaking with it. She started licking me all over. No other dog had ever been so happy to meet me and that made me feel pretty special. When Bubba got in the car and tried to pull her away from me her mood instantly changed. She turned on Bubba and tried to rip his hand off. Then she turned her attention back to me like nothing happened. Just when I thought she was going to smother me with licks and kisses, I heard Bubba say "Ok Clancy that's enough!" then he pulled her away from me and set her in his lap. Bubba held Clance in his lap as we drove away. Clance kept staring at me with her big happy face as we were going down the road. I guess I was staring at her too. So far this new life I'd been given was going pretty good. Mama was great, Bubba was a real friendly guy. And Clance? Well what can I say about her? It appeared she was going to be a great friend. I just hoped she wouldn't smother me with her licks and kisses bringing my life to a quick end. We didn't ride very far before the car stopped again. Clancy jumped out as soon as the doors opened and Mama handed me to Bubba. He carried me through a house with Clancy following and jumping up at us all the way. We came to a screened in porch where Bubba set me down on the floor. As soon as he set me down Clancy was all over me with licks and kisses. She sure was excited and If I didn't have other pressing business on my mind I would have let her know how excited I was too. As soon as I squatted in the corner, I heard Bubba yelling "NO!". He came hurrying towards me and picked me up, but he was too late. Bubba carried me outside. leaving the pile in the corner. Outside Bubba told me this is where I was supposed to do my duty. I wasn't sure what Bubba was talking about at the time. But after a couple days of Bubba taking me outside every two hours and praising me when ever I did my duty, I learned what was expected of me. Listening to some very disturbing comments while Bubba got down on his hands and knees to clean up after me when I made a mess in the house was pretty motivating too. It didn't take long to figure out we would all be better off if I did my business outside. After Bubba showed me where I was supposed to do my duty Clance and I were left on the porch to get acquainted for a while. Mama introduced me to Papa and he wasn't mad at all. After what Mama had said about him not being happy and having a fit if they brought another dog in the house, I wasn't expecting him to be so nice and friendly. Papa is a large guy with white hair like Mama, he walks real slow and careful. He has strings tied on his shoes that I like to pull on, but when I pull on the strings, the knots come undone and Papa has to tie them again. It takes some effort for Papa to get down and tie the knots on his shoes so I had to learn to resist that temptation. But he didn't seem to mind, as a matter of fact he'd laugh when I played with his shoes. But when Bubba saw what I was doing he scolded me and told me stop. That's the difference between Bubba and Papa. Papa hardly ever yells at me and Clance. He laughs with us and tells us jokes we can't understand, they must be funny though because he laughs at them. He lets us do almost anything and shares his meals with us. Bubba doesn't let us get away with things like chewing on shoes and furniture. Bubba won't share his food with us and when we do things we're not supposed to, he lets us know. |
