Chapter IV

Another thing I had to learn was how to walk with Bubba on a leach. That didn't take much learning and as long as I stayed by Bubba's side there was no problem. But if I tried to run ahead, Bubba would stop and I'd have to stop to because all of a sudden the leach would get real tight. Bubba and I would walk down by the river several times a day. At first just me and Bubba would walk together.

After a while Clancy went along with us too. That was a new experience. I wouldn't say Clance doesn't know how to walk on a leach. She just chooses to pretend she doesn't know how. Clance's all Cairn Terrier through and through, right down to her stubbornness. She probably already told you about the k-9 philosophy, how life's no bed of roses and sometimes you have to stop and sniff the feces. Well with Clance it's not just sometime it's all the time and it's not just feces she has to stop to sniff. She sniffs rocks, flowers, garbage and anything else she finds along our path. Where ever we go we always have to stop and wait for Clance.

When I first started meeting people outside our family, I found out what Bubba meant when he said Clance didn't share her toys. She runs up to any stranger that comes by. But when they start to pay any attention to me Clance gets between us and won't let them touch me. She pushes me away from the stranger then she goes back to them and lets them pet her.

Afterwards she makes up for her selfishness by showering me with attention and playing with her ultimate squeaky toy. It doesn't bother me that Clance doesn't want to share my attention with strangers.

Maybe its something only another Cairn Terrier can relate to. You see we have our own property code, it's not hard to explain, but it may be too simple for people to understand. Simply put, everything in the world belongs to us. That includes all people and animals. Clancy and I have an agreement, anything that can conceivably be considered a toy belongs to me, anything else outside of the family belongs to Clance and we share Mama, Papa and Bubba.
