Chapter V

One day Bubba started moving stuff around in the house. He took all the furniture off the back porch and put big sheets of steel over the windows. He was stowing stuff away in bags when he told me and Clance it was time we head back to the lake. I didn't know what he was talking about but Clance seemed to have an idea and she was pretty excited. The next day we loaded up the car and Bubba, Mama, Papa, Clance and I rode away from home.

We rode in the car all day and only stopped a few times to do our duty and eat lunch. We stopped and stayed overnight at a place called Motel 6. Then we woke up early the next day and started off in the car again. after a few days we stopped at a big red house where Mama and Papa's grandson lives. Their grandson shares his home with his wife a poodle named Bella and the tiniest person I ever met.

Bella was very protective of that little person, but once she got use to Clance and me being around she started to let her guard down. The little guy wasn't much older than me and even more clumsy. I guess he was just learning to walk and we had a great time playing together. Bella, Clance and me chased each other around the house with the little guy crawling after us. When he'd try to stand up one of us dogs would push him over then we'd all lick his face. He'd laugh and we would start running around the house again with him crawling after us.

Best of all was when it was the little guy's meal time. He'd sit in this real tall chair with a tray in front of him and his Mama would set some food on the tray for him. He'd take a little nibble of the food then he'd throw the rest at us dogs and laugh. His Mama kept giving him more food and he kept throwing at us.

After visiting for a few days Mama, Papa, Clance, Bubba and I got back in the car and drove away. We stayed over a couple nights at the Motel 6. Halfway through the third day we stopped at this big red house. As soon as the car stopped Clance got real excited Bubba opened the car door and she jumped out. Clance's excitement was contagious and I chased right after her.

While Bubba opened up the house Clance and I went exploring. This place wasn't like anything I knew before. The house sits on a hill overlooking a large lake. There are trees so big I couldn't raise my leg high enough to piddle on them. Clance showed me a huge pile rocks and told me they're called cairns. She say's they're named after us Cairn Terriers because were so good at tumbling the rocks and rooting out the chipmunks that try to make homes inside them.

There's another cairn on the lake shore along the sea wall, but Bubba doesn't like us playing on that one. He says there are water moccasins in it and he wants us to stay away from them. Bubba never lets us play with shoes.

While we stay at the big red house on the lake we wake up early in the morning and go fishing nearly everyday. Clance likes fishing more than I do, Bubba says she's a fish hound. I'm more interested in hunting. I like something I can see and chase around. It's kind of boring sitting on the dock watching a string and waiting for fish to bite the hook. I like to take the fight to the prey and see what I'm going to catch.

After fishing we go up to the store to get a newspaper for Mama. Then Bubba and me start working on our chores. Clance's a Mama's dog whenever there's work to be done so she keeps Mama company in bed while Mama has breakfast and reads the paper.
